What is a turtle ant?

Turtle ants are large headed ants that use their large heads to close off the entrances to their nests. Thus the name reflects the ability to protect the ant colony by using their hard heads. Much the way a turtle protects itself with its thick skin… Yes, I know its called a turtle shell, but referencing thick skinned turtles and hard headed ants is much more entertaining. Of course it’s also cliche to note that the big headed ant uses its head like a jock uses his fists.

Arizona given $950,000 tax dollars to research Ants.

Recent reports from Senator Jon McCain on how tax paying dollars could be going to waste included a cool $950,000 given to the state of Arizona to research ants. The lucky ants are the turtle ant and the harvester ant. The money goes to ASU and U-of-A. Individuals argue that this money keeps scientist in Arizona which will be good for the recovering economy. Others complain that the ants are remaining employed while many in the state are not. A little further research reveals that the near million dollars supports a total of 3.5 jobs at the universities.

And yet the rasberry ant is causing major problems in Houston and south Texas. They short out stop lights, cause problems in water wells, displace local wild life, and shut down manufacturing plants. But oddly enough the University of Texas, who is currently doing research on the ever invasive Rasberry ant, doesn’t receive nearly the same amount to research this problematic Texas crazy ant…. and we call the ants crazy…

Somethings you should know about other fire ants…

Fire ant colonies

You will find fire ants nesting outside near a kitchen, bathroom, water source, in wood, soil, masonry, block walls, and base of trees or shrubs. The fire ant can gain access into a home or structure through HVAC systems, power in and outlets and pipes. Fire ants have been found to nest in breaker panels, electrical boxes, and water boxes.

A fire ants diet is high in protein but will feed on almost everything. The fire ant has been known for eating through electrical and phone lines seeking out the wire insulation and soiled clothing. Its possible that these ants could also cause fires. The red fire ant is highly aggressive by nature and has been known for attacking non-responsive residents and pets. The bites  inflict pain and can result in nasty itchy welts.

Bees Attack – 4 Sent to Hospital

A recent AZ bee attack resulted in 4 workers being sent to the local hospital. Bees are aggressive and should be treated with caution. Most individuals are not allergic to bee stings. However, with enough stings, anyone, allergic or not, could be put in a life threatening situation. If you encounter a sever bee problem then perhaps you should call 911 before calling your a local Phoenix exterminator.

Here a couple of precautions to take around bees.

1- Do not disturb the bee hive! Bee in general will not attack unless the colony is threatened.

2- Run! If a swarm of bees becomes aggressive, run and cover your eyes and mouth as much as possible. Bees will actually target your eyes and other openings to inflict the most damage possible. So duck your head and run.

3- Don’t jump in the lake! While it may seem a good idea, and is often seen in comical TV clips, jumping into a body of water is not a good idea. You will not survive with out air and the longer you wait the more time you give the colony to catch up. Plus the first thing to come out of the water, your head, is not the target you want to make most available. Further, if you begin to hyperventilate from the bee attack being underwater will only make things worse.

4- Take proper precautions when treating a bee problem. If you decided to take a do-it-yourself pest control approach, make sure that you are properly equipped and that you follow the instructions outlined on the label.  Again, READ THE LABEL. If you hire a professional, stay away from the action.  You hired a pro so let him take the heat!

What to do if Stung by a Bee or Swarm of Bees?

If you are stung then you should consult your physician.  Common helps for bee stings are pain killers, benadryl, calamine lotion, and baking soda.  Again, consult your physician before taking or applying any of the above.  If you have a sever reaction then please go to the hospital or call 911.

Into the Scorpions Lair

Just a friendly invite to the following event being put on today in Cave Creek.

“Into the Scorpions Lair” Bug Hunt – Cave Creek Park
September 18, 2009 – 7 pm – 9 pm
The location is Cave Creek Regional Park. Meet at the Slate trailhead. The cost is $6 per vehicle. It should be fun little hike in to see some of Arizona’s creepiest creatures in their natural habitat. Hope to see you there.

Learning about Arizona bugs may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I support education and I support a healthy balance between bugs and the rest of God’s creatures. This little adventure should be fun for the whole family.

We currently have services with another pest control company, but we are not very satisfied with the results. I am interested in getting rid of earwigs and spiders in our home. We also have scorpions outside and sometimes they have made their way inside the house. We have dogs and cats so we are very concern with the product that you use. Please provide me with a quote and services that you provide along with info on the pet friend products that you use. Treesa, PHX 85233

Just moved in to a new house at **** Dunbar Dr., Phoenix, AZ 85042. Wondering what it would cost to get an initial service done — the house has been empty for a while so there are quite a few bugs, spiders, and I saw one scorpion in the house already. Thanks, Aaron W. – Phoenix 85042

I’d like to make an appointment for a free estimate on pest control treatment for our new house. It’s currently vacant, as we haven’t moved in yet. We’ve noticed scorpions, spiders, ants and mud wasp nests outside the house and in the yard. We’ve had a couple of scorpions in a bedroom and ants in the garage. Sofrema M.
