Phoenix Scorpion Season is Just Beginning

Scorpion Reports are starting to flow in.  Want to find Phoenix Scorpion Hot Spots? Our Phoenix Exterminator has a map of scorpion reports in your neighborhood to help you determine if you need Phoenix Scorpion Pest Control. Mesa, Queen Creek, Chandler are all mapped with high scorpion density.  Awatukee, Scottsdale, Fountain Hills, Paradise Valley, Cave Creek and Carefree tend to have a slightly higher scorpion call volume most likely due to the extensive dessert landscaping found in these areas.  Scorpions are found in Anthem and Maricopa as well but are a bit more spotty.  The West valley of Peoria, Glendale, and Suprise will also see moderate scorpion activity.

VIEWER ADVISORY: The following video gives a real example of the health hazards associated with scorpion stings. The images may be frightening to those that have pest fears.

Banner Poison Control Center reported 100+ calls of scorpion stings so far this month. The hospital officials say this is a substantial increase from the last month.  Your Bulwark pest control expert in the Phoenix metropolitan area says prime scorpion season is just beginning. Scorpions are most active between 75 and 90 degree weather.  As scorpions come out of the winter season and their less active dormant like or hibernation state they will began to mate and in 3 months will give live birth. A typical scorpion litter is 30-35 scorpion babies  but they can have up to 100 babies at a time.  Luckily scorpions will most likely only reproduce once per year since their gestation period is 3 months and the babies remain on the the mothers back for 2 to 4 weeks after that, leaving little chance for another reproductive cycle prior to winter.

The Scorpion Guy, AJ, is estimating that 80% of his phone current calls for pest control in Phoenix are scorpion related service requests.  Scorpion stings are climbing as temperatures go up.

Most stings are not fatal. But children are more likely to need medical attention as their bodies cannot metabolize as much venom as a grown adult. Most complications come in the form of allergic reactions to the venom. Mexico, which is home to similar dessert bark scorpions still reports a number of deaths per year due to scorpion stings. Mostly from the lack of a close hospital to help treat the victims. If a scorpion sting proves to be fatal it will happen within 24 hours of the sting. Those with sever reactions should seek medical attention immediately. Sever reactions are changes in breathing patterns, dilation of pupils, uncontrolled spasms, and paralysis.

Scorpion stings are common at night because scorpions are nocturnal by nature. The best advice we can give for parents is that you place mason jars or glass bowls under your child bed’s footings, and that move the beds 6 to 8 inches away from the walls. Scorpions can climb walls and will often fall from the wall onto bed or from the ceiling onto the bed.

Last year’s heavier rains will contribute to more vegetation and that will contribute to more bugs which means more scorpion food, which means more scorpion activity. 2010 Scorpion Forecast is looking high.

From your Phoenix Pest Controller, check your shoes and make that a start of a scorpion free day.

Bulwark Pest Control makes Favorite Place

“We’re a Favorite Place on Google!”

Bulwark Pest Control - Phoenix AZ favorite Place

Bulwark Pest Control - Phoenix AZ favorite Place

The owner of Bulwark Exterminating feels like he just won the lottery!  According to Google…

Over 100,000 businesses were identified as Favorite Places, representing less than 1% of the 28 million U.S. businesses. We believe that our standards for selecting businesses are as selective or more selective than other companies which have run similar initiatives.” http://www.google.com/help/maps/favoriteplaces/business/faq.html#biz-faq-decal

The internet is a buzz wondering how this will work.  Cnet reported on this feature and the possibilities it holds…

“Google has taken the concept a step further, however, in the use of the QR codes to link to the Place Pages. Owners of smartphones with a camera (Google specifically said that iPhone, Android, and most BlackBerry owners would be supported, but others may work as well) and QR code scanning applications will be able to launch this information in their phone’s browser.” -CNET

It really does seem an honor to be found by Google and recognized by the information leader as a “Favorite Place.” But what is google really after?  More information?  More votes?  More visitors?  Becoming the directory of choice, finally ousting the phone books all together? Should Bulwark give into this take over?

As a business owner, Adam hopes that being recognized will bring him more business.  And he feels that it will, so why not? Appearing in a window near you soon…

What is a turtle ant?

Turtle ants are large headed ants that use their large heads to close off the entrances to their nests. Thus the name reflects the ability to protect the ant colony by using their hard heads. Much the way a turtle protects itself with its thick skin… Yes, I know its called a turtle shell, but referencing thick skinned turtles and hard headed ants is much more entertaining. Of course it’s also cliche to note that the big headed ant uses its head like a jock uses his fists.

Arizona given $950,000 tax dollars to research Ants.

Recent reports from Senator Jon McCain on how tax paying dollars could be going to waste included a cool $950,000 given to the state of Arizona to research ants. The lucky ants are the turtle ant and the harvester ant. The money goes to ASU and U-of-A. Individuals argue that this money keeps scientist in Arizona which will be good for the recovering economy. Others complain that the ants are remaining employed while many in the state are not. A little further research reveals that the near million dollars supports a total of 3.5 jobs at the universities.

And yet the rasberry ant is causing major problems in Houston and south Texas. They short out stop lights, cause problems in water wells, displace local wild life, and shut down manufacturing plants. But oddly enough the University of Texas, who is currently doing research on the ever invasive Rasberry ant, doesn’t receive nearly the same amount to research this problematic Texas crazy ant…. and we call the ants crazy…

Bees Attack – 4 Sent to Hospital

A recent AZ bee attack resulted in 4 workers being sent to the local hospital. Bees are aggressive and should be treated with caution. Most individuals are not allergic to bee stings. However, with enough stings, anyone, allergic or not, could be put in a life threatening situation. If you encounter a sever bee problem then perhaps you should call 911 before calling your a local Phoenix exterminator.

Here a couple of precautions to take around bees.

1- Do not disturb the bee hive! Bee in general will not attack unless the colony is threatened.

2- Run! If a swarm of bees becomes aggressive, run and cover your eyes and mouth as much as possible. Bees will actually target your eyes and other openings to inflict the most damage possible. So duck your head and run.

3- Don’t jump in the lake! While it may seem a good idea, and is often seen in comical TV clips, jumping into a body of water is not a good idea. You will not survive with out air and the longer you wait the more time you give the colony to catch up. Plus the first thing to come out of the water, your head, is not the target you want to make most available. Further, if you begin to hyperventilate from the bee attack being underwater will only make things worse.

4- Take proper precautions when treating a bee problem. If you decided to take a do-it-yourself pest control approach, make sure that you are properly equipped and that you follow the instructions outlined on the label.  Again, READ THE LABEL. If you hire a professional, stay away from the action.  You hired a pro so let him take the heat!

“Into the Scorpions Lair” Bug Hunt – Cave Creek Park
September 18, 2009 – 7 pm – 9 pm
The location is Cave Creek Regional Park. Meet at the Slate trailhead. The cost is $6 per vehicle. It should be fun little hike in to see some of Arizona’s creepiest creatures in their natural habitat. Hope to see you there.

Learning about Arizona bugs may not be everyone’s cup of tea but I support education and I support a healthy balance between bugs and the rest of God’s creatures. This little adventure should be fun for the whole family.
